Cairns and Japan celebrate Sister City program

-

THE close ties between Cairns and its Japanese Sister Cities, Oyama and Minami, were reinforced recently with visits by two delegations of students and teachers.

Australia Japan Society FNQ (Cairns) vice-president Jeff Haynes said the students and teachers were delighted with their visit to Cairns and spent an enjoyable week in the region.

“The groups were welcomed by Cairns Regional Council, with an exchange of mayor-to-mayor gifts, the Cairns Office of the Japanese Consul and Sim Hayward, the Cairns Regional Council representative for Sister Cities.”

Mr Haynes said the Oyama students were “buddied up” with Cairns State High School students during their stay, while Minami students buddied with Trinity Bay High stu- dents. “These two Japanese Sister City teacher and student groups have been visiting Cairns for many years,” he said.

“The Japanese student groups say the annual visit to Cairns is another example of the special relationship be- tween Cairns and Japan.”

Minami (formerly Hiwasa) has been a Cairns Sister City since 1969 and Oyama City since 2006.
