AUSTRALIAN international motorcycle speedway rider Jason Crump cannot wait to ride in front of a strong Far North crowd tonight.
Crump, a three-time world champion, a world cup winner and world under-21 champion, is in Cairns to ride in the Barrier Reef 1000 Classic this evening.
The 41-year-old, who is now semi-retired, admits he is not as fit as what he used to be but is keen to put on a show.
“I still really enjoy getting on my bike and riding,” Crump said. “It is not about winning trophies and events, it is about trying to grow the sport.
“I am looking forward to getting to another track in another part of the world to race. I do not know much about motorsport in Cairns but I think my dad rode up there 15 to 20 years ago.”
Crump is riding in Cairns for the first time following a career that yielded seven world championship titles and putting him in the conversation for one of the most successful Aussie racers.
“It is great to have the opportunity to race in Queensland and boosting the sport is important to me,” Crump said.
“I am coaching a lot these days too. To have the chance to ride at different race tracks and promote speedway is really important to me.
“It is good for the young fellas racing in places like Cairns to go against people like me and see where they are at.” Racing at 6pm at the Thompson Road track in Edmonton.
