LOOK OUT FOR A CAREER IN LIFEGUARDING

-

EDUCATION

The Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard Certificate is recognised both at home and in some overseas destinations. It is considered a professional qualification.

Other qualifications include a Bronze Medallion, advanced resuscitation therapy, spinal therapy, Silver Medallion, fitness test, board rescue, and patient tube rescue. Lifeguards also need a blue card and driver licence.

MORE TRAINING

Ongoing training and refresher courses are a must to ensure lifeguards maintain the high level judgement, fitness and skill needed in the daily job and in emergency situations. Mental and physical preparation is just as important. At all times, lifeguards should have the capacity to demonstrate their ability has been maintained to an acceptable standard and they are up to date with any procedural and policy changes.

PAY SCALE

The average lifeguard’s salary is $45,000 per year. Wages increase modestly for a number of years but any additional experience does not have a big effect on pay.
