Women in sugar field praised
THE contribution of women in agriculture and science has been celebrated at Sugar Research Australia’s Meringa research station.
Agriculture Minister Leanne Donaldson visited the station and said she was pleased to see so many dedicated women driving innovation and research in the Australian sugarcane industry at Meringa.
“I had the opportunity to sit down and listen to what inspired these women to start a career in agriculture and sugar research,” she said.
“I congratulate SRA on demonstrating its commitment to women in its workforce and leading by practical example to show that there are bright career paths in both science and agriculture in Queensland.”
Senior researcher Dr Felicity Atkin said it was an industry she had a great passion for.
“I love the opportunity to be at the forefront of innovative research to develop exciting, more productive and disease resistant new varieties and take great pride in the outcomes this can deliver to our hard working growers,” she said.
Women make up 43 per cent of SRA’s permanent workforce.
