Teamwork essential in security industry

THE security industry is important in today’s society with its personnel working to protect people and their property.

That is why Cairns-based business Queensland Security Providers’ Melanie Powe became involved in the profession, because she wanted “to protect”.

Ms Powe said she had been working in security 12 years and four of those within man- agement. Helping her to rebuild the business he formerly worked for is colleague Matthew Hilton, who had been in security for six years.

“The best part of my job is having a cohesive team in which we work very well together,” he said.

Ms Powe agreed, saying she liked “being part of a team who work positively together to provide a safe and secure environment for workers and visitors to any sites we manage”.

Before working in security, Ms Powe was a probation and parole surveillance officer for Queensland Correction Services, while Mr Hilton had been a fire and safety officer with the State Government.

“Security work is a field that will never go away,” Ms Powe said. “With all the potential threats in today’s society, more and more businesses are in need of help protecting their property, assets and people,” Ms Powe said.

“If you’re interested in safety and security, this could be the perfect job for you.”

Ms Powe said that anyone interested in becoming a police officer might consider working in security first.

“It’s a great stepping stone to get to where you want to go in your career,” she said.

Mr Hilton said the security industry had so many avenues and was never overlooked so there was always a constant need for workers.

He said the need for more employees was one of the biggest issues he faced in the job.
