Reys counts on Global Guru going out on top

-

JORDAN GERRANS ALOOMBA trainer Lawrence Reys is hoping to get a few more runs out of veteran galloper Global Guru before the gelding steps into retirement.

Global Guru, by Spinning World from Galimist, will have one of its last career starts at Cannon Park this afternoon to coincide with the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in Melbourne.

Reys has just the two horses in work, Global Guru and Katter, who both ran second in their last trip to the races and the semi-retired tiler is optimistic of another bold showing from his stable.

Global Guru will tackle the Sun Tourism Benchmark 60 Handicap 1600m while Katter, who has been lumped the topweight of 60.5kg, will contest the Carlton Mid QTIS Benchmark 50 Handicap 1250m.

Hoop Nor Yadi retains the ride on Katter after leading the chestnut gelding to a fighting second last start at Cannon Park.

“Katter is more a 1400m horse but he is coming through his preparation,” Reys said.

“He is more targeted at the Melbourne Cup day up here over 1400m.

“I am hoping for a good showing over 1250m on Saturday. He surprised me with its run over 950m last start. He has never done anything like that over 950m, it only lost by a short half head. “I was happy with the run.” Global Guru ran a bold second last start at Innisfail earlier this month and Lawrence is keen for the veteran to add to its three career victories.

“This will be its last prep,” Reys said.

“We are going to retire him after a couple more runs.

“We might pull up stumps after that. He is ready for the paddock.”

Thoroughbred racing will be held at both Cannon Park in Cairns as well as Cluden Park in Townsville today.

The Townsville Turf Club hosts its annual Pallarenda Stakes while the Cairns Jockey Club will hold a five-race card.

The first from Cairns will jump at 12.55pm.
