FIRE UP IN TIMES OF NEED

-

BUSHFIRE season is well and truly underway in the Far North and, given the remoteness of much of the region, volunteer rural firefighters play a crucial role in keeping the community safe. There are about 1500 rural fire brigades across Queensland involving about 36,000 volunteers. Joining up can be a great way to learn new skills and help the community. When fires are burning and threatening property in remote corners of the region, rural brigades can often be the best and only response available. Among the skills volunteers can learn by joining the Rural Fire Service are teamwork, incident management, leadership skills and fire behaviour. Volunteers also take part in fire prevention activities such as hazard reduction burns and community education. Members must be at least 16 years old and require parental permission if aged 16-18.
