Huber in bid for fourth Crocodile silverware

-

JACOB GRAMS RIDERS will expend the last of their energy reserves in a lone race to Port Douglas in the ultimate test of who will be the winner of the 2016 Crocodile Trophy title.

In one corner, the threetime winner Urs Huber has a historic fourth title at his feet, knowing exactly what lies before him after following the same path down the Atherton Tablelands last year.

In the other is Belgium’s Sebastien Carabin, who ranks 50 places above Huber in the UCI rankings and has been at his wheel on every stage, just over a minute behind.

Stage 8 will lead the riders from Wetherby cattle station near Mount Molloy. The course rises slightly before plunging down the range on the Bump Track through Mowbray Conservation Park.

It ends in front of the Port Douglas Surf Life Saving Club on Four Mile Beach and is sure to evoke raw emotion from riders welcoming the thrill of finishing.

Huber knows all about the cheers of the locals at the finish and will be giving his all in a bid to triumph once again.

“After my stage win, I’m in a comfortable position for the last day,” he shared on Twitter after Stage 7.

Huber and Carabin will be the last two to start the course, just after 8.30am and will be expected in by 9.30am. Huber finished last year’s final stage in just over 54 minutes.

Alice Pirard has all but sewn up her maiden Elite Women’s title, going into the last day with a 50-minute lead.
