Ogilvy: Hawks must step it up

- JORDAN GERRANS

ILLAWARRA centre AJ Ogilvy admits the Hawks got ahead of themselves early in the NBL season and must turn it around against Cairns on Sunday night.

The Hawks were champions of the Australian Basketball Challenge, went on to belt Adelaide in Round 1, but have since dropped a quartet of games.

The Hawks hosted the undermanned Perth Wildcats last night before playing the second game of the weekend against the Snakes on Sunday evening.

The Hawks are set to regain guard Mitch Norton, the former Townsville skipper, for the clash with the Taipans.

The Hawks came to the Far North during the pre-season and won two games over Cairns.

Ogilvy was brutally honest as he described the Hawks early season form. “I think we may have got a bit ahead of ourselves and some of the guys that did not have as much experience took the Australian Basketball Challenge for granted,” Ogilvy said.

“Most of their teams rested some players and we were at full strength.

“We came out and had a good first game of the season, we got a bit ahead of ourselves.

“We have been pulled back into line and unless we turn it around, we are staring down the barrel of a long season.

“There is a lot of things we need to be better at.”

The Hawks have dropped games against the Sydney Kings twice and away defeats to Melbourne United and Perth Wildcats since their last victory.
