Teetering on edge ‘of war’ as Putin acts
NATO is rushing troops into eastern Europe as Russian President Vladimir Putin conducts a major nuclear war exercise, with one general stating the world is “teetering on the brink of war”.
Russia has just completed a nationwide, week-long exercise to prepare its population for widespread nuclear attacks. This included cruise-missile armed ships being sent to Russia’s Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad.
Russian Lieutenant General Evgeny Buzhinsky told Moscow newspaper Pravda the international game of “geopolitical chess” was being won by Russia.
“The West, collectively, is a fox in a henhouse, a man who shot his trusting best friend in the back, a sociopath and a psychopath, a monster,” he said.
“If we talk about the last Cold War, we are currently some- where between the erection of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban missile crisis. In other words, teetering on the brink of war, but without the mechanisms to manage the confrontation.”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said a new 4000-strong force in the Baltics and eastern Europe was a response to what the alliance believes are 330,000 Russian troops stationed on Russia’s western flank near Moscow.
“This month … Russia has deployed nuclear-capable (ballistic) missiles to Kaliningrad and suspended a weapons-grade plutonium agreement with the US,” Mr Stoltenberg said.
