Curb growth, save planet

-

IN order to save the planet we are being urged to reduce our ecological footprint, meaning sustainable development, less pollution and less waste, etc.

However, unless human population growth is being addressed, all these measures will be futile.

Large parts of this planet have been severely affected by human habitation.

But we seem to ignore this because powerful self-interests don’t want to face the problem of what is the root cause of the degradation of our planet – us.

There are too many of us and our philosophy of growth and consuming is cannibalising our planet.

But nobody talks about there being too many of us, because we have always been encouraged by state, by religion and by economic philosophy that we must grow.

Ask any religion where they stand on population numbers and you receive a mountain of platitudes on our God-given right to multiply?

Ask the state and the philosophy is to continue breeding as before, as long as you vote for the right party.

Naturally, capitalism wants more of us to sell their goods to or for us to pick up the tab for failed enterprises.

So until the Catholic Church, Islam and all religions get the message from above telling us to keep our numbers in check, and the state has the courage to tell us that endless growth is a furphy, there is little prospect of saving the planet.
