Oils go full circle with a star billing at Kuranda

- KERSTIN KEHREN

FAR North Queensland will welcome back legendary Aussie music outfit Midnight Oil for a special show under the stars.

Nearly 30 years after the Beds are Burning band last rocked the Kuranda Amphitheatre, the Peter Garrett-led Oils will make their longawaited return to the iconic rainforest stage on October 7.

The show is part of their The Great Circle 2017 world tour announced yesterday.

Kuranda Amphitheatre committee member Mandy Dewey witnessed the Oils perform there in 1985 and 1990.

“We drove up from Bowen with our four-year-old son for the weekend, thinking it was such a cool thing to introduce him to our kind of music. He slept, we danced through a hot, sticky night marvelling at the energetic band on stage,” she recalled of the ’85 gig.

Dewey was a volunteer at the venue during Midnight Oil’s show there in 1990.

“The image of steam rising and spraying from Peter Garrett’s head is something I and many others will always remember. We still talk about that concert,” she said. “I can’t wait for this concert; 26 years is a long time between gigs.” Tickets to Midnight Oil at the Kuranda Amphitheatre are available from ticketek.com.au from noon on February 27.
