Battle to land shark ray

- TOM VOLLING tom.volling@news.com.au

A FISHERMAN, who tied a rope around a 2.5m shark ray’s tail and dragged it to shore, said it was like “hooking on to a tractor”.

Port Douglas resident Shane Down endured a 50minute battle when he jagged the shark at Four Mile Beach this week.

“The shark was solid, I had to dip the reel in the water and my fingers were burning from the line. It was one of the best battles I’ve had down there,” he said.

Mr Down, who had his dog with him, was dragged down the beach until he reached a sand bank.

“It got to a stalemate where I wasn’t gaining line and she wasn’t taking line,” he said.
