5 EXTRA WAYS PARENTS CAN HELP

-

ATTEND AN EVENT

1Even when children may be old enough to be dropped off or drive themselves to a weekend school sport match or music performance, go along anyway, even if it’s only once every few weeks to avoid cramping their style.

DISCUSS SCHOOL DAILY

2Ask students about what they did in a class that day, as well as other activities outside of class time.

TALK TO TEACHERS IN GOOD TIMES

3Avoid making parent/teacher interviews or meetings only about addressing behavioural problems or academic progress. Have positive conversations about learning goals and objectives.

CREATE A HOMEWORK HAVEN

4Doing schoolwork at the kitchen table may allow parents to supervise, but dinner cooking could also be a distraction. Create an environment conducive to learning.

GO OUT AND HAVE FUN

5Older children and teenagers can benefit by attending social events and going to places that can contribute to learning. For example, a shopping trip to a farmers’ market can help foster an interest in becoming a chef. SOURCE: AUSTRALIAN RESEARCH ALLIANCE FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH
