O-line rookie says strategy real key

-

JORDAN GERRANS outs for the fledgling Falcons in their first season.

“Scott is a rookie and is on a quick learning curve,” Falcons coach David Tibbetts said about his offensive lineman.

The offensive line’s primarily responsible is blocking as they rarely handle the ball, unless the ball is fumbled by a ball carrier, a pass is deflected and caught by a lineman or when a player who is normally an offensive lineman takes a different position on the field.

Ferguson says the position requires a lot more than just strength and aggression.

“It is a bit of a chess game to be honest, playing on the offensive line,” Ferguson said.

“On the defensive line, they just want to smash the guy with the ball, but we have a specific role each play to make sure the right play comes off.

“It is really technical on offence, we need to be aware of where the ball is going, it might not be to you but you need to be alert.

“It is really a chess game and that is what I like about it.

“You need to think about it as a whole, not just your role, but as a group.” Tibbetts said he anticipated a high scoring game day today in Townsville with the Falcons sending a strong squad.

“We will put points on the score board this week,” he said.

“It should be a fun game to watch.

“We keep improving individually and as a team as we get more reps together.”

The Falcons will then host their final home game at Holloways Beach Sporting Complex on March 4.

The seven-game series was claimed by Townsville. Interested players can contact Otto Suavai on 0497 805 913.
