Mrs Densmore said she was hoping for about 8000 volunteers, but expected less than 5000.

“It might be a bit optimistic, but there’s a lot of excitement about it,” she said.

“The schools have been decorating, it’s going to be visually superb, some of the art work we’ve got coming from the school is phenomenal.

“It would be really nice for the region for something positive to be happening and we’re encouragin­g north Queensland to put the banana split back on the menu.”
