Alphonse Gima, who is likely to face off with Spartans centre Traye Hodge in a clash tipped to deliver excitement.

“He’s an older guy but still has lots of experience and can run with those younger guys,” Irvine said.

“The two best outside centres in the comp going head to head will be good to see.”

Five-eighth Ethan Thompson and No.8 Cameron Thompson – hailed as “sensational” by Irvine – also bring a new dynamic to a Northern side that has traditionally bossed the annual fixture.

“We are going to unleash a few of these guys,” Irvine said.

“It gives them an oppor- tunity to push for Thunder selection. Cameron Thomson will appreciate getting an opportunity to showcase his skills after missing out in previous rep campaigns.”

Though the Rangers are yet to lose to their southern foes, Irvine insists there is no extra heat to keep the streak alive.

“Nah, no pressure on us. “We are just giving the guys an opportunity to show their skill and score a few tries,” he said.

“The group has bought into all of our structures and processes that we want to achieve within the short three-week training time frame we set.”

Today’s match at Machans Beach kicks off at 4pm.
