Special day for derby

-

JACOB GRAMS A GAME between Southern Suburbs and Edmonton always has an extra meaning, but it’s far from the minimal distance between them.

Each year the clubs reflect on the spirit in which one young man enjoyed the game of rugby league, playing for the annual Ryan Deemal Memorial Shield, a trophy named in honour of the son of former Suburbs and Storm coach Harry Deemal, since 2009.

The ledger stands at four apiece and Southern Suburbs president Luke Saunders said it was a special day.

“He always found joy in watching football,” he said.

“Wherever Harry was at, Ryan was never too far off. He was just the biggest fan of whatever club his dad was at.”

A big crowd is expected at the rare Saturday night fixture at Alley Park.

“Everyone’s sort of got a vested interest. You either go for one or the other because of our location," Saunders said.

But arguably the most enticing game of the round will take place at Jilara Oval on Sunday afternoon in a top of the table clash between Yarrabah Seahawks and Mareeba.

Both teams look to have undergone somewhat of a revival in 2017.

Brothers will be looking for their first win tomorrow at home against Atherton.
