Fred’s workplace a hit in so many ways
ALICIA NALLY
The 37-year-old started coaching professionally and now lives out his passion each day at the Trinity Beach Tennis Club. “I love teaching,” he said. “Each day I am learning something and enjoy having a job where I can meet and create new friends in the environment where I work.
“The best part of the job is watching my pupils grow and improve their self to become a positive person both as a tennis player and off the court.”
Mr Lay was named Tennis Queensland Club Coach of the Year in 2014 and was a finalist in the Hotshot Coach of the Year competition.
While overseas, Mr Lay won the US National Collegiate Athletic Association Division 1 regional finals three times and played in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national competition.
Back home, though, issues like wet weather prove to be most bothersome for the Mt Sheridan father-of-two who coaches on an outdoor court.
But he strongly recommends the job to those with a positive, bubbly personality who enjoy working with a variety of people.
“The interesting thing about this job is you are continually learning,” he said.
“Most times it starts off with an idea about how to further develop a student’s skills and it then becomes about getting the right resources to make the program successful.”
