THE Far North will host another major softball event next year after the success of the Queensland School Sport 13-19 years Girls Softball State Championships recently.

The best emerging softball players in Queensland battled it out in the Far North last week at the Walker Road Sporting Precinct Edmonton.

Following the tournament, Cairns was given the nod to host the 2018 13-19 years Schools Girls National competition next year.

As many as 10 school teams from across Queensland competed for the honour of State Champions with the local Peninsula team finishing eighth overall.

The annual tournament had not been hosted in Cairns since 2007 with Peninsula school sport state convener Ann-Marie Ladner pleased to see it return.

“It was wonderful to see the event back in our backyard,” Ladner said.

“The local team, Peninsula, played off against Darling Downs to contest 7th and 8th position.

“After a hard-fought close game, the girls went down by one run, with a final score of 3-2.

“That was an improvement of two places from last year, which is terrific. Peninsula were comprising of 14 girls representing their respective state and independent and private schools from Cairns to Innisfail, and were excited about playing on their home turf.”

Sunshine Coast won the overall tournament.
