INNISFAIL Vikings will strap their boots on in the top grade for the first time in years when the FNQ Rugby season kicks off today.

Club president Mark Boevink, who was instrumental in rejuvenating the Cassowary Coast troops, believes the players can put on a show when they take on the Northern Beaches Mudcrabs this afternoon.

He said he was encouraged by recent form, which included winning the Port Douglas sevens plate final and snaring wins in the Lighting 15s competition.

“We have been pretty happy with the way preseason has gone and the enthusiasm shown by the players,” he said.

The side is expected to be dangerous in broken play through a “dynamic” backline.

Mudcrabs coach Andrew Derrington said a strong defensive effort was needed to contain the Vikings’ fast men.

“Watching them play in the lightning round, they’ve definitely got a fast elusive backline. They’re going to be very good in broken play and we have to careful about it.”

Mudcrabs captain Russell Todd said he didn’t know what to expect from the new team.

“They are a bit of an un- known quantity,” the 25-yearold Englishman said. “We will be working to a game plan and focus on getting that right – we know what we need to do.”

Meanwhile, reigning premiers Barron-Trinity Bulls will lock horns with JCU Mariners.

The Mariners will be marshalled by a new captain, Claude Thompson, against a Barron squad that has welcomed new “exciting juniors” and recruits.

Barron coach David Brooks said JCU were “always strong”.

“It is always nice to get the ball rolling and hopefully get this one back. Whoever goes the full 80 minutes will win,” he said.

Brothers’ new coach Rick Huriwai expects a “tough game” against the Southside Crusaders.

“We are not a big team so we will have to play away from the forwards,” he said. “We are a fairly young side ... but we have some old heads.”
