Appreciating Queenslanders

- Nick Dalton nick.dalton@news.com.au

HIGH-SET Queenslander homes are an integral part of the housing fabric of Cairns.

Their charm, timber construction and elevation are well suited for our tropical lifestyle.

They are in demand with buyers lining up at open homes and competing fiercely for the traditional house.

A close location to the CBD is an attraction too.

Suburbs and streets across the city are lined with Queenslanders, in particular North Cairns, Edge Hill, Parramatta Park and Earlville.

A street of Queenslanders is a sight to behold, all different with a character of their own.

Each one is distinct and many owners have lovingly restored them while adding modern touches such as airconditioning and the latest bathrooms and kitchens.

Other features are the intricate timberwork, flow-through ventilation and bigger blocks of land.

Of course, they cost more to maintain and clean, but that is the price to pay.

People are now appreciating the value of Queenslanders in the innercity and owners are relishing their personalities.

They are good value and are too costly to rebuild from the ground up.

So it’s a pity one at Edge Hill has been demolished to make way for a new, modern home.

However, most owners realise the value and use of a Queenslander and most are being retained with added touches of tender loving care.

Fortunately it is likely that most Queenslanders will be retained in Cairns with their owners reinvesting in upgrades and their upkeep.

We must ensure these wonderful homes remain part of Cairns.
