GRACE MASON and frustrated at something.”

Ms French said Mr Livingstone maintained the chokehold for about a minute until Mr Quayle went limp.

“That’s when Jake got off him,” she said.

“Alex and I were looking at each other. I didn’t know what to do. I was, I think, in shock.”

Ms French said Mr Livingstone then “made a joke”.

“It seemed to me like he was happy,” she said.

Mr Hansen said they left seconds later and walked down an alley near Rusty’s market, where Mr Livingstone dumped his shoes in a bin.

He told the court that the next morning they retrieved the shoes, then disposed of clothing and shoes at sites in White Rock and mangroves near the Cairns Airport, driving past the site twice.

“(This was) to see whether the man was dead or alive,” Mr Hansen said.

“We seen there was plenty of police cars and we seen a man in a white suit who I assumed was a coroner.”

The trial resumes on Monday.
