Brenda’s life is all at sea and surely nothing can beat that

- TOM VOLLING

BRENDA Kay believes she is “living the dream”.

The Marlin Marina retiree has lived on a 50-foot vessel with her husband for two and a half years.

“We were tired of what we were doing. We wanted to be free,” she said.

The couple moved to Papua New Guinea from Gladstone about six years ago after quitting their jobs as contract cleaners on the Gold Coast. They were moored at the Lae Yacht Club on the east coast.

Now settled in Cairns, Ms Kay spends her days renovating the boat and reeling in Spanish mackerel from places such as Green Island and Fitzroy Island.

Ms Kay said the best thing about living on a boat was you could decide to move away quickly if you did not like your neighbours, but she added she had never experienced that problem in the Far North.

She was hanging up washing at her boat on a sunny and windy afternoon this week.

“It is good conditions to do the washing,” she said.
