DECORATED CAREER

-

Q First off, tell us a bit about your footy career. Cairns born and bred and you won the Gold Medal twice so you must have been a pretty good footy player?

A I played all my football basically in the Cairns region. I started with the juniors. Under-15s at that stage was the first lot of junior rugby league. We used to train and play a lot of games at Cairns State High School. It was Past High then with the juniors but then I ended up playing with Kangaroos, played just about all my years there before moving across to Ivanhoes. I almost won a premiership at Ivanhoes, a little bit unlucky, but I was very fortunate to play for Kangaroos, through the years in the 70s where we got 10 out of 11 grand finals.

Q What was the highlight? How do you pick one after all those premierships?

A You always try to progress through your career and play at the highest level but playing for Queensland Country against Brisbane was my highlight. It was a bit in the twilight years. I was around 30 when I got the opportunity to play there, but also playing for North Queensland, winning a game in Townsville against Great Britain, that’s the Roger Millward days. They were a pretty good side. Playing for Kangaroos and winning those grand finals was pretty good as well.
