NRL SIGNS A WORRY

-

Q What do you make of the player signing craziness of the NRL right now? It seems to be all we’re talking about.

A It certainly is. The Tigers scenario is a bit of a debacle and that’s the sort of worrying thing with what we talked about with under-18s and under-20s and it can be a worrying sign for the younger kids. A lot of our players running around here wouldn’t have player managers but the next minute we’re going to have our under-18s and under-20s with player managers and it’s going to be a difficult one I think moving forward. But there’s great opportunities for young kids. But there’s always a downside like we’re seeing in the NRL at the moment.

Q Do you catch much of the NRL? What do you think of the season so far?

A I watch a bit of it. It’s really good to see some of those clubs that haven’t been as good, like St George, it’s great to see them win again. The Broncos and Cowboys have been playing some good footy and one of my favourites is the old South Sydney. They’ve been good to us the past four or five years bringing a game to Cairns and it will be great to see them playing at their potential and they will draw a big crowd when they come up here to play against the Cowboys. I probably was a bit of a South Sydney fan as a kid, from when I played a bit of school footy we played as Queensland against NSW at Redfern Oval for the final. But you’ve got to be a Cowboys fan, being North Queensland born and bred.
