Chastened Bulls ready to stampede Comets

- JACOB GRAMS

THE possible return of skipper Alex Plowman and a home crowd starved of football in the past month could be just what Mareeba need to find their missing mojo.

The Bulls have just one point from their past two games, well below their own expectations but at the same time a tribute to the closeness of the FNQ Football Premier Men’s competition unfolding this year.

Mareeba coach Alex Srhoj was disappointed with a 2-2 draw against Leichhardt on Tuesday, but expected the run to fire up his underperforming side against Southside Comets this weekend.

“It was good to play and as far as preparation for Sunday, there’s nothing better than the tough game we had on Tuesday night,” he said.

“I’m expecting on Sunday the boys will show up. We should have been top of the table. We lost two points on Tuesday.

“I think we’re definitely in the mood to try to turn things around, not that we’ve been playing that badly, but we’re getting punished for our mistakes and we’re not putting things away.

“We just need to get our mojo back and there’s no bet- ter time than back at home on Sunday.”

While not strictly a top-ofthe-table clash, a win to either Mareeba or Southside would put them into the No.1 position, since Innisfail have a bye.

Leichhardt FC coach John Dillon said that after four points in two games against Mareeba and Innisfail, his side was confident of shaking the defending premiers.

“We’re sort of trying to steady the way we play but the problem is getting consistent people on the park,” he said.

“We know Stratford are very good in their front four, so we need to contain them there then we know within ourselves we’ve got enough of a threat to win the game.”

The home draw could also inspire Mareeba’s Premier Women to challenge for the win after just losing out to Leichhardt in their last fixture.
