The first step to gaining work as a translator or interpreter is to become proficient in a language other than your native language. Some people learn a second language at home or while studying abroad, but many consolidate language skills at a university. Then translators and interpreters must pass strict testing set down by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters in order to be officially employed in the positions.
