Dredging up silly fears

-

I AM amazed that Cairns and Far North Environment Centre director Roz Walden is given valuable space to write her alarmist green diatribe against the Cairns port dredging project ( CP, 19/7).

What has CAFNEC ever done to benefit the Cairns business community and why is CAFNEC allowed to spruik falsehoods in this paper’s business section?

Cairns is a port city and we have been dredging our inlet for more than 100 years.

The Great Barrier Reef has and will continue to survive all the green scares.

The dredging is a vital piece of maintenance that needs doing for the benefit of all of Cairns.

Why can every other major seaside city along the east coast of Australia get their port’s dredged regularly, yet we have to be beholden to the green left up here in the Far North?

The Cairns community is 100 per cent behind this work, not the noisy 8 per cent minority who continue to do nothing but argue against any further development and advancement of our society, simply for the point of arguing.

Enough of this green nonsense, just dredge the harbour. Bill Schutz, Mt Sheridan
