LESSONS OUTSIDE FOOTY

-

The people who read this may not have a deep understanding of your background. You coached amateur footy and worked at a high-powered financial intelligence agency between playing in the AFL and stepping into coaching at the elite level. How has that shaped the coach you are today?

ALife experience is important with coaching. It helps you manage better and understand certain pressures, deal with crises and challenges. It helps you get people up when times are tough. It helps you ride out the inclines. As we gain experience in the corporate sector, it helps us understand various situations in terms of sporting codes. I think it has helped my coaching. Ultimately you need to understand the game and the tactical side of things and teach your players the technical aspect and condition them. In this day and age, the senior coaching role is about management as much as it is about the raw coaching aspect. It is important you have had some exposure to that and I suppose my journey has helped me prepare.
