Southside Comets eager to break in ground

-

SOUTHSIDE Comets’ holistic approach to building a strong football future has finally reached completion as the club prepares to play its first matches at Walker Road Sporting Precinct today.

Football fields are ready to go after Cairns Regional Council put the final touches on the facility this week, just in time for the pointy end of the season.

Southside Comets president Keiren O’Brien said having a dedicated football facility was “the last piece of the puzzle” so the club could build on work done to cement junior development pathways.

“The whole approach we took probably five years ago was we needed the facilities to get everything right,” he said.

“Sharing a field with another sporting code, we couldn’t grow the club any more because it was limited by facilities.”

Four fields will be dedicated to football year-round and O’Brien said the central Ed- monton location would tie the club even closer to the community.

He praised the council and Division 2 councillor John Schilling for their commitment to supporting sporting and community facility projects.

He said the new surface should make for some attacking, fast-flowing football for teams this weekend.

The ladder-leading Premier Women will run on at 3pm, while the Premier Men take on defending premiers Stratford at 7pm, with the winner to go top of the ladder.

The Dolphins will be hurting after going down to Edge Hill 3-1 in the Intersport Cup in midweek.

The Tigers will take their confidence into a tussle with a desperate Mareeba side, who also had a win in the Cup.

Tomorrow, all eyes will be on the key Premier Women’s match between Innisfail United and Leichhardt.
