Carter’s Viking heart

Alex thrives thanks to unlikely inspiration

MUCH like the fictional Nordic men tattooed on his biceps, Manunda Hawks defender Alex Carter has embraced his ruthless side in 2017.

The once pimple-faced teenager who quietly meandered around Cazalys change rooms before training is now one of the Hawks leaders after a mid-season switch to the backline, tasked with shutting down some of the competit- ion’s best forwards each week.

But the apprentice greenkeeper, 24, said TV program

Vikings had helped inspire his new perspective on football.

“I just like the way they go about things and the way they live,” Carter said.

“They’re ruthless. That’s the way they live and that’s how you should go about your footy, I reckon.”

Carter, who now boasts a series of tattoos inspired by the television show, said defence had allowed him to be a more damaging player for his team.

“I’m obviously more aware of my direct opponent, especially when you’re playing one-out on someone,” he said.

“Whereas in the forward line it’s about kicking goals but down back you win the ball and create, then set up play for your teammates. That’s how you beat forwards.

“It’s been a big shift but you’ve got to do what’s best for the team. I’m not bothered where I play now.”

This week, Carter will most likely start alongside the Cutters’ Dwayne Bosen in the elimination final – a tantalising rematch against one of the league’s most enduring stars.

Bosen has kicked 35 goals this season but has battled injury throughout the year.

“I think I’ve played pretty well against him this year,” Carter said.

“It can be a little nerveracking. He’s bigger than me but I think I’ll match it with him.”

Senior Hawks teammate Cameron Gauci said Carter’s willingness to take on a new role had helped the side become a finals team after missing out last season.

“It’s brought more stability to our club,” Gauci said.

“He really seems to be thinking about the way he plays.

“His size and hardness complements our other defenders like Willie Aisi and Nathan Weiss.

“He’s taken on the challenge and grown as a player.”
