Port must keep solid run going
VETERAN defender Wes Glass has urged Port Douglas to “put the foot on the throat” and build their recent run into an AFL Cairns premiership dynasty.
The Crocs playing assistant coach is still spurred on by being sent packing in straight sets in the 2015 finals series after they claimed the minor premiership with just two losses for the season.
Since then, they have barely dropped a game, won the 2016 flag and will try and complete an undefeated campaign this afternoon against Manunda in the 2017 grand final.
Some footballers are stoked to win one flag over their careers but Glass, a South Australian, wins them for fun.
He played in six straight premierships for Willinga in South Australia between 2004-2009 in the Great Southern Football League and grabbed another last season with Port.
Asked what is different about this season’s group, the versatile defender believes it is the 2015 disappointment that provides the edge.
“This group is a lot tighter,” Glass said.
“We have kept a lot of the group together, we have all the boys from Horsham, and getting bundled out in 2015 has made us a lot hungrier.
“We got the monkey off our back in 2016 and there is nearly 10 of us still playing from then to now.
“It helps everyone being together and now we need to put the foot on the throat and keep the club up as long as we can.”
Glass sees himself stepping into coaching once his playing days are done and lauded the influence current Brad Cooper has had on him as he prepared for a coaching role.
