Pressure off Edwards at new club Rovers
A FORCED change to his former club for Brenton Edwards should have rival clubs worried as the Cricket Far North season heats up.
Edwards is one of three players, including Rhys Camilleri and Josh Chadwick, who joined Rovers after their previous club Tully did not enter first grade this season.
Camilleri and Edwards made an immediate impact last weekend, scoring 51 and 29 respectively to lead the way.
But it’s those starts Edwards wants to begin converting into big scores, something he hopes to do a bit easier without the responsibility he endured last year.
“For me the last couple of years, what I’ve gone through every week chasing a side and blokes not turning up, it was really tough, so it’s a massive relief just to come and all I have to do is turn up to training,” he said.
Edwards said he now felt in “a great place” to take his game to another level, despite being one of the top performers in 2016-17 and already making another CFN Fusion squad.
Converting starts is the biggest issue for the all-rounder and if he gets it right, he believes a better contribution could be crucial to helping Rovers lift a trophy in 2017-18.
“There’s certainly stuff at Rovers we’re doing where they’ve set me a few goals this year,” he said. “I’ll try to reach them and obviously the main goal of every club is to win a premiership and of course there’s a lot of water to pass under the bridge between now and a premiership, but we need a good start to get there.”
Rovers and Atherton will battle it out today at Endeavour Park in a bid to retain a winning record to start the season.
