HAVING FAITH IN A VOCATION
EDUCATION
It takes about seven years to train to become a priest, but it also depends what study you have done beforehand. Catholic priests train through Australian Catholic University. Those from other denominations train through the corresponding college or institute appropriate to their faith. Priests usually obtain a Bachelor of Theology, undergo psychology assessments, receive spiritual support, and take part in regular meetings with guidance officers.
MORE TRAINING
All priests have to complete some time working in a community before being ordained. Some priests go on to further academic study completing masters or doctorates in areas of theology or church management. Further training in pastoral care such as visiting the sick and troubled, counselling individuals, married couples or families and co-ordinating parish activities as well as ministering baptism and leading funerals.
PAY SCALE
Priests and pastors can earn on average between $30-50,000 per year. This amount can vary between denominations and depend on experience within the church. Housing and uniforms are usually supplied too.
WHO TO CONTACT
The best point of contact for those interested in pursuing a career as a priest would be the leader of a local parish. The National Council of Priests may also help. Go to nationalcouncilofpriests.com.au
