A time to give and be caring

-

CHRISTMAS is supposed to be a time of joy and celebration, especially for families and children.

But, for many in our community, it’s a time of despair as some families struggle to provide presents and even food for their loves ones.

It leads to stress and unhappiness and often conflict.

That is why it is vital that our community gets behind Mayor Bob Manning’s annual Christmas Cheer Appeal which was launched yesterday.

Although, we live in a wealthy country and region, there are others who are much poorer and need help.

Fortunately there has been a great start with businesses chipping in $20,000, well on the way to a target of $65,000.

Let’s hope other businesses will follow the lead and also donate.

The appeal raises money to pack and distribute Christmas hampers to people who are doing it tough within the Cairns community. Last year, 700 hampers were provided to local families and that is the aim this year too.

As well, the appeal will assist older members of our community who might otherwise go without on Christmas Day and don’t want to seek hand-outs.

If you know someone who needs a helping hand, a neighbour, or even someone you don’t know but may need assistance, then let one of the charities know.

No one should have a miserable Christmas which can be a lonely time for many.

It’s time for the community to dig deep. Nick Dalton Deputy editor
