Furry friends just a bonus in this career
Retail offers a wide array of entry-level retail jobs which don’t require a certificate or a degree. Most employees can move up the retail ladder with drive, hard work and persistence. However, retail is increasingly competitive and in some instances becoming more technologyfocused, so formal education or specialised training via a registered training organisation or university could help job seekers get an edge over applicants. Retail workers often aspire to management once they have accumulated a number of years experience. Retail managers supervise sales and service employees, create sales plans, manage inventory and maintain customer service standards. Education requirements for retail managers range from a TAFE certificate or diploma to a bachelor’s degree but experience is the biggest influencing factor. ALICIA NALLY Mr Wood said. “I though may as well put the two together and see how it goes.
“The animals people bring in is the best part of the job. One guy brings his pet peacock in every few months and people bring in their cats in a harness.”
While the store does not have many pets for sale, customers can only buy fish and RSPCA rescue cats, Mr Wood and he colleagues are still tasked with looking after the in-store animals.
He said responsibilities such as these had helped boost his knowledge and skills.
“Considering what I knew before I started working here, I’ve learnt quite a good amount, particularly about fish,” Mr Wood said.
“Most people get a fish tank, get some water and put a fish in there, but it’s an entire different world once you get into it.
“The biggest mistake people make is buying them as a gift and the other person has no idea how to look after them.” Mr Wood, who owns an alexandrine and conure parrot, said the variety of animals he gets to meet, including a pet pig, keeps things busy and customers quickly become like family.
“As far as an owner and pet relationship goes, it’s a really healthy thing. I’d compare it to a parent-child relationship,” he said.
“It’s a good environment, there are really good vibes, here.”
