Teams will have to work for wins at Mareeba

- JORDAN GERRANS

MAREEBA club captain Gavin Smith believes the heavy rainfall around the Far North will throw a cat among the pigeons in tomorrow’s third round of the FNQ Golf pennant season.

Mareeba fell in all three grades last week to Cairns but will have the bye tomorrow as they host the third round of the popular series.

Last round, defending Agrade FNQ Golf pennant champions Half Moon Bay were toppled by Gordonvale at Atherton Golf Club.

Half Moon Bay will be looking for redemption as they tackle Paradise Palms, while Southern Districts face Innisfail, Cairns will go up against Atherton, and Mossman and Gordonvale will both be looking for a win.

Smith said the Mareeba course was in perfect condition for a competitive round.

“Mareeba has been very dry until recently. If this rain keeps up it will slow it right up and each team is going to have to earn their points,” Smith said.

“The greens are in superb condition – they have been great all year in all honesty.

“I have had a look where we will place the pins for Sunday and we are not going to give the other teams anything cheaply.

“All the teams will need to work for their wins.”

Smith is expecting around 120 spectators on course for the day.

FNQ Golf Association president Danny Bradley is looking forward to another hotly contested round.

“There was some steady rain, with more expected showers during the week,” Bradley said. “Good luck to all players.” The third round tees off tomorrow from 7am.
