Celebrity recruit causes stir

- JACOB GRAMS

THE Northern Pride hierarchy is confident Todd Carney will win over his new teammates and fans despite a chequered past.

Coach Ty Williams said it was “surreal” to have the controversial half on board and he hoped his players could learn from the high-profile recruit.

“We’ve got a young playing squad again next year and I think it will help those young fellas out,” he said.

“What he’ll bring to our squad will obviously be the experience he’s gained along the way on and off the field

“He knows he’s got a lot of hard work to do. He’s got to earn a lot of trust not only within us, but the NRL community again and I’m sure the kid’s up for the challenge. I’m excited about it and I’m sure the community is as well.”

Pride CEO Greg Dowling said he hoped fans would “give him a second chance” and expected to see more bums on seats.

“It has created a big fanfare,” he said.

“I reckon he’s going to put more bums on seats.

“We’ve had a few negative reports, but we’ve had more support from people saying they’ll come have a look.

“Sponsors ... say they’re rapt.”

Dowling said success was vital for the club to progress and Carney was the key.

“We need a bit of success at the moment after a few lean years, because it’s hard to sell a losing club ... and we think Todd’s going to be able to rectify that,” he said.
