Early festive cheer for us

- Nick Dalton Deputy editor

TWO major funding initiatives for the Far North announced by the Palaszczuk government cynically suggests a state election could be announced soon, possibly even tomorrow.

The integrated resort precinct earmarked for the waterfront means a regional casino licence has been set aside for the Far North on public land that will be made available to a successful bidder.

The 47 extra officers for the Cairns region are desperately needed as the city is in the midst of a property crime spree, particularly involving youth.

The “Global Tourism Hub” on Wharf St, from the Hilton hotel through to the heritage listed White’s Shed and next to the cruise liner terminal, is designed for a developer to cut through red tape and not having to find an appropriate site.

The hub is right next to the existing Reef Hotel Casino and Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the expressions of interest process “may draw interest for a second or expanded casino operation”.

At one stage Aquis proponent Tony Fung, if he had successfully bought the casino, had plans to buy the existing Pullman Cairns International Hotel across the road and also the Ports North hotel site (part of the hub precinct) next to the Hilton property.

It’s obvious there are international investors lining up to put in bids for what could be a $1 billion project.

The extra police (also on the Gold Coast and in Townsville) will help immensely in the city and target wayward youth on the streets at night.

Early Merry Christmas Cairns.
