Young pace bowler blazing trail for talent

- JACOB GRAMS

AN Atherton trailblazer is leading the way for more Far North girls to strive for higher cricket honours after winning a place in the Queensland under-13 team.

Pace bowler Amy Hunter excelled at the recent school state titles in Mackay as part of the President’s XI, which included a number of players from the Peninsula district.

Atherton Junior Cricket coaching co-ordinator Tony Potts said Amy’s attitude to improving her game was the reason behind her success.

“She’ll go a long way. She’s a team player,” he said.

“She puts it in the right place. She’s consistent.”

Potts said Amy, who has been at the forefront of a surge in interest in women’s cricket on the Tablelands, was just one of sev- eral talented girls ready to push for representative selection.

“We had Amy and another couple of girls started playing then we’ve just had an influx of girls wanting to play,” he said.

Potts said the greater exposure of the Southern Stars, as can be seen in the women’s Ashes series in progress, was adding to the snowball effect. Amy will head to the national titles in January 2018.
