FUN AND GAMES

Q Can you tell us more about Beach Netball?

A Beach Netball is something different and it is all about fun and participation. It’s played on the sand, on a half court with modified rules, so everyone can play. Taking the best aspects from other sports, to create a super fun competition that encourages more people to get out and play netball. There are five on the court, there are no positions, no thirds and anyone can score. Goal scoring is also a little different, with one-point goals from within the square, and three-pointers from outside, also making it an exciting game to watch. Games go for 10 minutes and the competition consists of a round robin, with the top four teams playing off in finals. Beach Netball also has a shoot out, where every team nominates one player in a three-point sudden death. Combine this with no shoes on the court, DJs pumping the tunes all day, a sponsor live site and food trucks, it really makes for a phenomenal day out on the sand.

Q Why did Beach Netball come to Cairns?

A Beach Netball has received outstanding support from James Cook University, Cairns Regional Council and Tourism Events Queensland, making it a really easy decision to come to Cairns. Beach Netball is a brand new concept, but one that will continue to grow. It’s quite exciting to have the likes of star netballers such as Caitlin Bassett, Paige Handley, Erin Bell and Renee Ingles all be involved in our version of the sport.
