EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO GET INTO GROUNDSKEEPING

-

EDUCATION

A skilled handyman or groundskeeper takes care of maintenance tasks at home, or at an office or other building facility. Most groundskeepers earn years of experience on the job or learn the skills and knowledge for the role through trades such as carpentry, plumbing or as an electrician. Some registered training organisations offer courses in grounds maintenance or landscaping, both of which can assist with work on the job.

MORE TRAINING

If a groundskeeper has not undertaken formal training, some employees may choose to complete study through a registered training organisation. However, most continue learning on the job through colleagues or trial and error. Maintenance staff can also work their way up in a place of employment and take on roles managing teams, working with financial officers and taking a part in planning facility infrastructure.

PAY SCALE

The average pay for a groundsman or maintenance worker is about $23.32 per hour or about $50,000 annually. This can change depending on the employer and skills possessed by the worker.

WHO TO CONTACT

The Housing Industry Association is the official body of Australia’s home building industry and could offer some information on the care. Otherwise, make an appointment to speak to a worker at a local school or business.
