CAIRNS HAS BEEN A HIVE OF ACTIVITY IN THE PAST YEAR AND THE NEXT 12 MONTHS LOOK SET TO ECLIPSE EVEN THE MOST POSITIVE OF PREDICTIONS FOR THE REGION. THE
CAIRNS POST HAS COMPILED A LIST OF EVENTS, PROJECTS AND ITEMS RESIDENTS AND VISITORS TO THE CITY CAN LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2018. 1 Commonwealth Games basketball heats in Cairns on April 5-10. 2 Reef to Reef Mountain Bike Race on August 9-12. 3 North Queensland Cowboys will meet Wests Tigers at Barlow Park on February 17 in pre-season trial. 4 Targa Great Barrier Reef from August 31 to September 2. 5 Quicksilver Port Douglas Dive Centre opens in July including a 4m-deep diving pool with a glass viewing wall. 6 Hemingway’s Brewery to open Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal brewery and bar in mid-2018. 7 The Cairns Performing Arts Centre is set to open in the middle of 2018 as part of The Precinct project. 8 Tour of the Tropics cycling event will run over five stages between Edge Hill, Malanda and Yungaburra in August. 9 City Centre Alive will continue transforming the city heart into a landscaped pedestrian friendly area with public art and feature lighting. 10 Shangri-La Hotel, The Marina Cairns, will redefine luxury in the city with the transformation of 184 guest rooms in two phases during 2018. 11 Riley, the first of The Crystalbrook Collection hotels in Cairns will open in August 2018. 12 New exhibition space and meeting rooms are included in the refurbishment and expansion of the Cairns Convention Centre which is scheduled to begin mid-2018. 13 Chef Ben Wallace to open cooking school at Oak Beach. 14 The Whitlams will play a 25th Anniversary Tour show at the Tanks in June. 15 Gold Coast Suns will return to Cairns for an AFL match at Cazalys Stadium in April.
