Stab accused in hospital, likely to face charges

-

GRACE MASON AND JANESSA EKERT A MAN accused of stabbing two people at an Earlville home on Thursday night remains in hospital with police likely to charge him after his release.

It is alleged the 43-year-old attacked a 57-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman during an altercation at a De Jarlais Street residence.

The older man defended himself and hit the alleged offender over the head with a bottle.

All three were taken to Cairns Hospital with the couple both requiring treatment to stab wounds, while the alleged offender remains in a ward with a head injury.

Police said he was expected to be released either today or tomorrow, when he would likely face criminal charges.

Nearby resident Lyn Bishop described the incident as “scary”.

“That sort of makes you a little bit uneasy,” she said.

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said she had been living in the area for 16 years, but was now moving after ongoing incidents in the neighbourhood.

“I’ve tried to stick it out but I can’t do it anymore,” she said.

She said her home had been broken into and car keys stolen, among a number other recent criminal activity.
