On Abbott St crossing

Cairns city planners are different. After having silly traffic lights near the Pier (gone now, thank goodness), get rid of the crossing on the Abbott St side of the casino. Graeme, Woree DMR regulations (2009) state, in part: when driving in Queensland you must give way to pedestrians using children’s, pedestrian or marked foot crossings. Pedestrians stand at the edge of the crossing and wait for the traffic to stop. Cross when the traffic has come to a complete stop. If there is more than one lane to cross, be sure that all approaching traffic has seen you. Traffic must give way to you once you have a foot on the crossing. Tony, Bayview Remove the crossing completely. The crossing at the end of that block is so close you can throw a stone to it. No other block in the city has a crossing midblock. Mark, Edmonton The blind spots are because of the centre garden plots. Locals are proud of our wide roads in the CBD. To remove the pedestrian crossing on Abbott St, I will do for $5000, including buying paint roller, black paint and hire of safety cones. I will start at 8am and will be in pub at 10am. Can Do, Cairns I think it an excellent idea to slow the traffic in Cairns CBD. It makes it much safer to check out the pretty ladies and to prevent running into the car in front. Rex, Edmonton

On other matters

Here’s an idea banks? Instead of offering lollies to people in the queue, how about opening up a third teller? Betty, Kanimbla Re: Higgs (CP, 11/1). At what age do you start rego payments on bicycles? Parents buy bicycles for their children to ride, if you charged rego on them then you will be killing off a free family pastime. Get out of your car and ride a bicycle. Then you can pay for my bicycle rego. Jason, Caravonica Here we go again wiping gender ID off driver’s licences. Seriously. Is this country going completely bonkers. Why? Because one small minority say it’s discrimination. Oh please cry me a river ... whinge, whinge and more whinge. What are we leaving behind for our children to deal with? I will tell you: one ridiculous mess. Knightmare, Smithfield Re: Andrew (CP, 12/1). When the rain radar is down when it is raining just look out the window. The Snake, Redlynch Hey Mr Nice Guy Roger Federer. Please don’t get caught up in the Nick Kyrgios saga. He is not even close to your league. Just stay as you are and let the others sort their own self-made messes out. Rog Fan, Woree Re: bagging plastic profits (CP, 12/1). The banning of plastic bags last time was never done to stop the litter and it will not stop it this time. Now, if there was an incentive of reward, like 10 cents for plastic and glass bottles, it would be more proactive with some success. Brian, Kuranda I was going to join a gym in the CBD but now I can’t because of paid parking. So CBD loses my business and I have to find another gym in suburbs second rate to my choice and needs. Anon, Cairns
