State of play unclear in big wet fallout
TO play or not to play, that is the contentious call facing Cricket Far North first-grade hosts in the penultimate round of the two-day season today.
Atherton, Barron and Norths curators have their fingers crossed enough sun will shine this morning for at least some play to be possible in the region and it could have huge ramifications on the finals race.
Players from Barron, Rovers and United have not played for close to a month due to the finals last weekend and previous wet weather, but concerns over wildly different wickets from week to week have some asking whether pushing to play today is in the spirit of the game.
Barron captain Jacob Fulton was pessimistic about play taking place at Trinity Beach and held concerns one club would be disadvantaged if only part of the day’s play went ahead.
“I think it’s a bit rough to prepare something that’s going to be poor one week, you get put in and get rolled, then it’s flat the next week,” he said.
“Obviously we want to get on to try to get out of last spot.”
Rovers captain Tom Lever said if the match went ahead, the toss would be integral.
An intraclub centre-wicket practice held at Endeavour Park last Saturday and several indoor sessions should put Rovers in good stead if play goes ahead.
The club holds the vital third position going into the penultimate round, less than a point in front of Norths, who take on Mulgrave at Griffiths Park.
Atherton are due to play United at Loder Park in the other match.
