Once you have decided it is appropriate to ask for a pay rise, schedule a meeting with your manager. Here’s what to say. YOU Hi boss, can I have a pay rise? B0SS Get in line, I’d like one too.

YOU Yes, we’ve had a busy year. I’ve been thinking about my performance and think it is time it was reflected in my pay.

BOSS I wish I could but I don’t have any room in the budget to pay anyone more. Sorry.

YOU Yes, times are tough. However, I’ve brought in new revenue this year through (X/Y/ Z) clients. I’ve started a course to improve my skills and already I’ve used some of those learnings in my job, such as when (insert example).

I volunteered for those special projects (X/Y/Z) that are outside my job description.

My job description/award outlines that when I achieve a milestone (name it), my salary should increase to the next level and I have done that this year.

BOSS I hadn’t realised the extra work you have put in and your achievements. Good work. Let me look at the budget again, but it is pretty tight.

YOU Thank you. I’ve done some research on the market rate for someone with my skills and experience and I believe a pay rise of ($X) would be fair.

BOSS If you think you can earn more somewhere else ...

YOU That’s not what I meant. I’d prefer a financial reward for my performance but if you can’t provide that, is there another way I could receive a boost? BOSS What do you mean? YOU I like this company and see my career progressing here. Can I put myself forward for (X) training/mentoring/professional development program? Is it possible for me to take my annual leave during school holidays? I know I could be more productive if I spent one day working distraction-free from home, perhaps on Mondays? If you do not agree my work this year deserves a pay increase, can we set some targets so I may be considered next time?

BOSS Sure, let’s talk about that.
