A BACKGROUND in retail has been the perfect environment for David Hall to learn all the skills needed to be a real estate agent.

The LJ Hooker Edge Hill agent has now been in his new career for nine months and said he genuinely enjoyed assisting people with their property goals.

Mr Hall has lived in Cairns since 2002 and spent his entire career in sales and customer service.

As part of his experience, Mr Hall has completed more than 20 commercial fit-outs and bought nine residential homes, giving him an extensive knowledge on a diverse range of property types.

“I have always had an interest in property, styling and renovations,” Mr Hall said.

“It’s a great career with a self-employed feel without a lot of the self-employed stress.

“The variety of people and properties is probably the best part of the job. No work day is ever the same.”

Mr Hall said real estate was the type of career where, despite claims to the contrary, “success doesn’t happen overnight”.

“But if you put in the hours and learn how to be work well in the real estate industry you can become very successful,” he said.

“The different types of personalities and the way people see and hears things differently is the most interesting part of the job.

“A psychology degree would be a definite advantage in this industry.”

But the pervasive negative stereotype of agents was perhaps the only downside to the job.

“People love to condemn real estate agents when the truth is the vast majority are hard working, ethical professionals who work tirelessly to achieve results for their vendors,” Mr Hall said.
