Personal trainers design and deliver exercise programs, training and assessment for individuals and small groups in gyms, fitness centres and health clubs. The top skills for a personal trainer are a good level of physical fitness, enthusiastic, outgoing personality and good communication skills. Most trainers can get their foot in the door as a fitness instructor with an entry-level certificate course, or get qualified to work as a personal trainer with a Certificate IV in Fitness.

Qualifications in nutrition and business are often a stepping stone to greater expertise within the fitness industry and is a popular career progression for personal trainers. Further study can be done full-time during the day, or parttime in the evenings and at weekends and could be completed in tandem with another health-related industry, such as massage therapy or dietetics. Fitness training can be done almost anywhere, anytime.

The average salary of a personal trainer is $55,000 per annum. Trainers work with a wide range of people with different health and fitness goals and may be required to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings.
